The Tom Bradley Wing of the Central Library is a fitting tribute to the enlightened man who presided over Los Angeles for five terms as mayor. During his long tenure, he both inspired and executed amazing growth. As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the wing named in his honor, a major question one may ask is, why was Tom J. Bradley so important to the Central Library?

Who was Tom Bradley?

Tom Bradley was the first, and so far only, African American mayor of Los Angeles. He served the city for 20 years from 1973-1993, [photo undated]. Security Pacific National Bank Photo Collection

Bradley was born December 29, 1917, to Lee and Crenner Bradley, once sharecroppers living in a small log cabin in Texas. They moved to Arizona where Bradley, as a young boy, picked cotton along with his parents. While on the campaign trail decades later, in California’s Central Valley cotton fields, Bradley said, “That [experience] was enough. I could never fill that 25-pound bag.”

The family moved again, in 1924, to Los Angeles, near Temple and Alvarado streets, when there were now five children: Lawrence, Tom, Willa Mae, Ellis who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age, and Howard. Bradley excelled in school with the support of his family. He attended Polytechnic High School where he was recruited to attend due to of his athletic abilities in track and football. These early successes in his academic career propelled the studious Bradley to consider leadership as a personal goal. He earned an athletic scholarship to UCLA in 1937 where he excelled once again, but by Bradley’s junior year at UCLA, he felt the pull of public service and took the entrance exam for the Los Angeles Police Department. Placed near the top of the examinees [earning a 97], he left college to enter the department academy in 1940.

The Path to Politics

His effectiveness in bringing groups together while a police officer led to his next goal: serving on the Los Angeles City Council. He applied for the 10th District seat in June 1961 while still a police lieutenant, losing to Joe E. Hollingsworth. He ran against Hollingsworth three years later in April 1963, winning not one but two elections, one for the unexpired term left by City Controller Charles Navarro, and the other for a full four-year term. Bradley was sworn in as a City Councilman, the first African American to do so, on April 15, 1963.

In 1969, he ran for mayor against the incumbent Sam Yorty, but lost. Most political pundits agree it was because of an egregiously racist campaign waged by Yorty. Undaunted, Bradley ran again in 1973 and won. He had his sights set on redevelopment and making LA an international city/hub. With the passage of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) 1974 redevelopment plan, places like the Bunker Hill financial district, the Warner Center, and Century City were developed to what it looks like today. Other projects include the construction of Los Angeles’ light rail network and expansion of the Los Angeles International Airport which would later bear Bradley’s name with its completion in 1984. That year was a highlight on another level, as Bradley was the key to bringing the 1984 Summer Olympic Games to Los Angeles.

Bradley’s Library Love

Bradley spent just as much time planning and developing, as he did to establish human relations commissions in the city. He supported various ethnic and special interest groups with a focus on education and connecting Angelenos together.

None of his efforts were as far-reaching as his redevelopment plans for DTLA. He encouraged the inclusion of historic buildings in the development push and played a vital role in evaluating and preparing historic buildings in the event of emergencies like earthquake or fire. As the driving force in establishing a fire safety plan for the Central library in 1978, he worked with the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAPD) to install fire alarms in 1980-1981, and created emergency first response drills and practices. Bradley’s foresight led to the swift and successful response to the first of two arson fires at the library on April 29, 1986, with no casualties among the 750 people involved at the scene, including patrons, employees, and firefighters.

Bradley’s strategic vision for the library brought together developer Robert F. Maguire III, ARCO CEO Robert O. Anderson, and City Council’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). He spearheaded the financing plan for the library which included the utilization of investment tax credits and tax allocation bonds, however, the most creative solutions proposed by the team of Maguire, Anderson, Bradley and the CRA was the sale of unused air rights (the vacant space from the top of the building to the maximum allowable building height on the site) of the Library.

Maguire Thomas Partners subsequently purchased the library’s air rights for $125 million, almost the entire amount needed for the library’s expansion at $152 million. Under the terms of the agreement among the city, CRA, and the library commission, created after five years of complex negotiations led by Bradley, the deal to “transfer” the unused space was signed in January of 1985. Thanks to the creativity, persistence, and negotiation skills of Bradley and the other principals, the library’s renovation and expansion began. The east addition of the library was named for the man with the “creative air rights plan”.

After Bradley’s last term expired, he retired only to endure several years of health complications. He died at the age of 80 and was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery.

DERACINATION “Forced displacement”, Blacks in Los Angeles Are being forced to move out of Los Angeles, CA “REMOVAL OF PEOPLE FROM ONE AREA TO ANOTHER IS A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY”

Afro-Americans/Blacks are victims of DERACINATION “forced Displacement” is taking place in the City of Los Angeles. REMOVAL OF PEOPLE FROM ONE AREA TO ANOTHER IS A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY”

DERACINATION

Forced displacement or forced immigration is the coerced movement of a person or people away from their home or home region and it often connotes violent coercion. Someone who has experienced forced displacement is a “forced immigrant”, a “displaced person” (DP), rarely also a “displacee”, or if it is within the same country, an internally displaced person (IDP). In some cases the forced immigrant can also become a refugee, as that term has a specific legal definition. A specific form of forced displacement is population transfer, which is a coherent policy to move unwanted groups, for example, as an attempt at ethnic cleansing. Another form is deportation.

My Divine Mission is Promoting and Advertising the “CLEANING-UP” starting with the MEDIA MANIPULATION OF THE VOTERS & CONCEALMENT OF INFORMATION TO THE VOTERS. Stop the Chicago Style Politics By Television Media

Addie M. Miller’s  Divine Mission is Promoting and Advertising the “CLEANING-UP” starting with the MEDIA MANIPULATION OF THE VOTERS & CONCEALMENT OF INFORMATION TO THE VOTERS.

Former Los Angeles Councilman Nate Holden, stated during council meeting, the election process in the City of Los Angeles is reminiscent of Chicago style politics, further we don’t want Chicago style politics in the City of Los Angeles, Quoted by former Nate Holden and Councilman Rudy Svorinich, Jr.

In my opinion the 2013 primary election was Chicago style politics by the television Media here in the City of Los Angeles.

Fox News practice democracy allowing all 20 GOP presidential candidates participate in the debate “Yet KABC-7 & NBC4LA “DID NOT” allow the People see & hear all the Mayoral candidates 2013 Televised Debate. TV Media Controls L.A., CA

cropped-addiemaemiller-11Addie M. Miller, believes it is a total disgrace and a “terrible dishonor” to the United States of America and the people, when Walt Disney Co.-ABC Holding Co. that owns television network KABC-7 and Owners NBC Universal NBC and NBC4LA television network, that purposely denied the voters to hear and see who were ‘actually the certified official candidates for Mayor of the City of Los Angeles’ on their televised held in Los Angeles, CA for 2013 primary election.

Yet, the Republican presidential primary debate hosted by Fox News at 5 p.m. on Aug. 6, 2015 in Cleveland, Ohio all 20 GOP presidental candidates were allowed to participate.

Fox News executive Michael Clemente has sincerely practice democracy, by allowing all 20 GOP presidential candidates be heard and to participate in the debate, that was aired Thur., August 6, 2015. He was very respectful to the Voters of the United States. Michael Clemente divided the debates into two.

The announcement by Fox News executive Michael Clemente means low-polling candidates who might not make the 1% level.
Fox News is gifted to have an executive who my no means wants manipulate the voters. Thank you Mr. Michael Clemente.

It is a disgrace and a “terrible dishonor” to the United States of America and the people, when Walt Disney Co.-ABC Holding Co. that owns television network KABC7 and Owners NBC Universal NBC and NBC4LA television network, that purposely denied the voters to hear who were actually candidates on their televised in Los Angeles, CA for 2013 election.

Over 50 years ABC and NBC has been manipulating the voters and having the power to choose who ABC and NBC want to win and be heard. In my opinion and research ABC and NBC television networks has over thrown the government with this unlawful and treason practice

Sometimes, I wonder do these JUDGES have interest or/stock in ABC and NBC, whereas the Judges allowed these corporations “ABC and NBC” to violate the People of the United States.

Isn’t it a conflict of interest for a Judge to decide a case against a corporation, if the Judge has or had personal/financial dealings with the corporation(s)?

Mr. Michael Clemente please continue to honor the people will, thank you again. May GOD continue to bless you.

Sincerely from, Addie M. Miller

This is a Shame Before God, that a property owner(s) or property manager(s) can sexual harass, spy on the tenant(s) every move in the room through their smart phones, computers, smoke detectors etc. What are cities in the United States coming to?
Finally what these evil people that control property are NOW being known and revealed. Are the property managers/staff or property owners being paid by a third party to invade this couple right to privacy or are the Property manager/Staff some sort of John Wayne Casey known as an Serial Killer in United States.
In my opinion property owner(s)/property manager(s) should be sued in a Court of Law and prosecuted for invasion of privacy. Many for years has I stated it is against the LAW, for a property owner(s)/property manager(s)to have hidden cameras looking at the tenants. What is on the manager(s)/owner(s) mine while he is looking at the people through hidden cameras.

Speak your mind, no landlord/staff or any other person is to make a Subliminal Threat, an “expression of intention to inflict evil, injury, or damage towards you because you post a copy of a news article.”    Are they are guilty what is written in the news article stated??   I believe this is why these  perpetrators continue to violate the law.

Yes, they can manipulate their followers (staff) to go against you, but remember you are helping other new or potential victims.  These perpetrators probably been getting by with this sort horrendous, extremely unpleasant, horrifying acts of  for years!!

Mayor Tom Bradley, was my Mentor, Adviser and Friend. His advise to me, “Give the people of all Cultures their needs for a better Whole Class City”

TOM BRADLEY 38th Mayor of Los Angeles, serving from 1973 to 1993 (20 years). He was my mentor, adviser and friend.

Addie M. Miller was a Scout for Mayor Tom Bradley for the betterment of City of Los Angeles.
(5). an act or instance of reconnoitering, inspecting, observing, etc.

Now the City of Los Angeles is filthy, polluted, massive crack sidewalks, pot holes throughout the city of Los Angeles “until if you drive a vehicle you may have to get the shock on your vehicle repair regularly”, cover up of contaminated soil with clean soil then the contaminated soil comes back after a rain.

Before Tom Bradley became the 38th MAYOR of the City of Los Angeles, he was a Police Officer for the Los Angeles Police Department and he was known for Walking and strolling through the streets of Los Angeles

During his service as a Police Officer he personally seen the turmoil and what the City was in need of. That’s when he decided to become Mayor and the Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles and make Los Angeles a WORLD Class City.

In my opinion Tom Bradley was not a lavish person dressing in a suit a tie everyday and driving stylish automobiles.

Tom Bradley was a grass root public servant (LAPD Officer) and seen what the City of Los Angeles needed. Maybe that is why the Airport is name after him. Police officers sees all and knows the people in the City. Tom Bradley patrolled the City of Los Angeles “walking” when he was a Police Officer for the LAPD!!
